Playing tired mother-of-three in Tully, the Academy Award winning actress put on 50 lbs for the role.
On Saturday the actress opened up about the 'brutal' side effects of the weight gain while sitting down at a special Q&A while attending TimesTalks ScreenTimes Presents: Tully.
'It was really brutal,' Charlize expressed. 'I like having that moment at the end of the day (of shooting) when you change in your trailer, get in your car, go home and you’re you. But I couldn’t do it on this and it really got to me.

Beauty in black: Charlize later changed into a lace pencil dress and strappy heels as she stepped out in NYC
'I couldn’t leave this character because my body was just dictating where my mind was and how my moods were.'
Charlize added that she doesn't think she should be praised for gaining the weight.
'I know a lot of moms who feel like (crap) because it takes that long and everybody’s expecting them to be back,
'Me gaining weight for the movie — it’s hard when somebody’s like, "Wow, that’s really brave!" Moms do this all the time and we don't call them brave. We're like, "Why are you still carrying that baby weight?"'
Camera ready: Charlize kept her scarlet lipstick from earlier and swept her locks back into a low bun
And despite previously revealing that overeating had given her depression, Charlize told Time Out London that the gain 'wasn't a big deal'.
'Women gain that amount, if not more, every time they get pregnant. So it's not that big of a deal,' she said.
'I was playing this woman and I wanted to get closer to her. I don't think when an actress does that we have to get so focused on it.'

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Charlize said she would gorge on mac and cheese at 2am and would eat around the clock to maintain the weight - even eating In-N-Out burgers and milkshakes for breakfast.
'You know, it was a huge surprise to me. I got hit in the face pretty hard with depression. Yeah, for the first time in my life I was eating so much processed foods and I drank way too much sugar.'
'I was not that fun to be around on this film,' she added.
The publication also reported that it took her a year-and-a-half to shed the weight.
